Visiting Bali feels like a never-ending adventure and it offers something for everyone. From the popular beaches in the southwest to the lesser known north west. I must admit I was a bit hesitant about visiting Bali as it’s a popular holiday destination and the country is influenced a lot by tourism. People that we spoke to before about their experiences were either loving or hating it.
Day 1-4: Candidasa & Sidemen
For the first three nights of our stay we travel to Bali’s more slow-paced east coast, to the seaside town of Candidasa. Like everywhere else in Bali, there is still a lot of traffic, but far less hectic than the south coast. Although often overlooked, Candidasa is an ideal base for exploring this part of Bali and there are plenty of activities to keep you busy.
We stay at Lotus Bungalows, a small-scale, seaside resort overlooking the Lombok Straight. The bungalows are basic, but they cater to every need and the outdoor bathroom is particularly nice. Breakfast is included in the room rate which you can enjoy outside near the infinity pool.
Day 4-7: Menjangan Island & West Bali NP
If you’re looking for an off the beaten track location in Bali, head to Bali’s far northwest corner. Located in the protected West Bali National Park, close to the town of Pemuteran, the boutique nature retreat Nusa Bay Menjangan offers pristine natural beauty, crystal clear waters and a stunning house reef . In fact, it’s the only resort in the national park and can only be reached by a 20-minute boat ride. Even better, it’s only a stone’s throw away from Menjangan Island, by far Bali’s best snorkeling location. Upon arrival, you are greeted by wild ‘ Menjangan’ deers, cute ebony leaf monkeys and cheeky grey macaques who are freely roaming the grounds of the beach resort. Make sure to lock the door of your bungalow, as they they won’t hesitate to enter your bungalow ; )
Day 7 - 10: Nusa Lembongan
Just off the coast of Bali, you can find three islands, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida. Lembongan has the most to offer in terms of accommodation, beach clubs, beach swings and things to do, and so, traveling with two teenage kids, this is an obvious choice. You can easily get around the island in about one hour by scooter or like us, by renting a golf cart.
